What Affects Your Packers and Movers Quote? 8 Things That Decide the Price
Two families moving the same distance can get very different moving quotes. That is because the price of a move depends on much more than the number of kilometres. Knowing what affects your quote helps you compare offers fairly and avoid surprises on moving day.
1. Volume and Type of Goods
The biggest factor is how much you are moving and what it is. A one-room set needs a smaller vehicle and fewer people than a fully furnished home. Heavy or delicate items — a large fridge, a piano, glass tables, antiques — need extra care, extra packing material and more hands.
2. Distance and Route
A local shift within the city is priced differently from an intercity move. For long routes, the road, tolls and the time the vehicle and team are away all affect the price.
3. Floor and Lift Access
Moving from a ground floor house is easier than from a tenth floor flat without a working service lift. Stairs, narrow corridors and long walking distances from the vehicle to the door all add work.
4. Packing Needed
Full packing by the moving team, with bubble wrap, corrugated boxes and stretch film, is different from loading goods you have packed yourself. Ask what packing materials are included in the quote.
5. Extra Services
- Dismantling and reassembling beds and wardrobes.
- Uninstalling and reinstalling appliances (often done by a separate technician).
- Unpacking and arranging at the new home.
- Storage if your new home is not ready.
- Car or bike transport along with household goods.
6. Moving Date
Demand for vehicles and teams is higher at month-end, on weekends and in peak shifting seasons. A flexible date can make planning easier.
7. Shared or Dedicated Vehicle
For long-distance moves, some companies offer a shared vehicle (part load), while others give a dedicated vehicle for your goods only. Ask which one your quote is for.
8. Taxes
Check whether GST is included in the quoted price or added on top.
How to Compare Quotes Properly
- Get every quote based on the same list of goods — ideally after a survey.
- Ask for the quote in writing, with what is included and what is not.
- Ask about payment terms, the cancellation policy and how damage claims work.
- Be careful with a quote that is far lower than all others. It may leave out packing, loading or taxes, or add charges later.
Why We Survey Before We Quote
At Century Packers and Movers, we give a quote after understanding your goods, by a survey in person or on a video call. The price is confirmed in writing, there are no hidden charges, and anything extra is discussed with you before it is done. You pay 50% at booking and the balance at delivery.
