The moving vehicle has left and your new home is full of boxes. Unpacking can feel endless, but with a simple order of work you can have a comfortable home in a few days instead of living out of cartons for weeks. Here is how to unpack and settle in faster.

Before You Open Any Box

  • Check your goods against the list given at pickup, and note any damage on the delivery receipt.
  • Take photos of any damaged item and inform the moving company in writing quickly.
  • Make sure every room's boxes are placed in the right room — labels make this easy.
  • Clean the kitchen shelves, wardrobes and bathrooms first if you could not do it before.

Day 1: Essentials Only

  • Open your essentials bag: chargers, medicines, toiletries, towels and a change of clothes.
  • Set up beds and bedding so everyone can sleep well.
  • Set up a basic kitchen: kettle, a pan, a few plates, cups and spoons.
  • Check that water, electricity and gas are working.

Day 2: Kitchen and Bathrooms

  • Unpack the kitchen fully — the room you use most each day.
  • Place heavy utensils on lower shelves and daily-use items within easy reach.
  • Line shelves if needed before placing crockery.
  • Set up bathrooms with toiletries, towels and cleaning supplies.

Day 3: Bedrooms and Wardrobes

  • Hang clothes first, then fill drawers.
  • Set up children's rooms early so they feel at home.
  • Unpack study tables and work-from-home setups.

Day 4 and Later: Living Room and the Rest

  • Arrange furniture before unpacking decorative items.
  • Reconnect the TV and internet using the photos you took of the cable setup.
  • Unpack books, showcase items and store-room boxes last.

Unpacking Tips That Save Time

  • One room at a time. Finish a room before starting another, so you can see progress.
  • Flatten boxes as you go. Keep a few for storage and give the rest away for recycling.
  • Keep a bag for packing waste — paper, bubble wrap and tape — so it does not spread through the house.
  • Check boxes carefully before throwing away packing material, so small items are not lost.
  • Keep screws and fittings in their labelled bags until furniture is fully assembled.

Settle Into the New Area

  • Update your address on Aadhaar, bank accounts, gas connection and vehicle papers.
  • Find the nearest pharmacy, hospital, grocery store and petrol pump.
  • Introduce yourself to neighbours and the society office.
  • Save local emergency numbers.
