How to Spot Fake Packers and Movers: A Safety Checklist Before You Book

Every year, people lose money or goods to fake packers and movers — companies that quote a very low price, then demand more money mid-way, or simply disappear with an advance. A few simple checks before you book can protect you. Here is a safety checklist.

Warning Signs of a Fake Mover

  • A quote that is far lower than everyone else, given over the phone without asking about your goods.
  • No physical office address, or an address that cannot be found on a map.
  • Only a mobile number — no landline, email or website with clear company details.
  • Pressure to pay a large advance immediately, often to a personal UPI ID or account.
  • No written quote or booking confirmation.
  • A name copied from a well-known company with a small spelling change.
  • Refusal to give a list of goods or a receipt at pickup.

Checks to Do Before You Book

  1. Visit or verify the office. Check the address on a map and, if possible, visit.
  2. Check the website and contact details. The company name, address, phone and email should match everywhere.
  3. Ask for a survey. A genuine mover wants to see your goods (in person or on a video call) before quoting.
  4. Get the quote in writing, with what is included: packing, loading, transport, unloading, taxes.
  5. Read the terms — payment, cancellation and how damage claims are handled.
  6. Check reviews carefully. Read recent ones and look for detailed experiences rather than only star ratings.

Pay Safely

  • Pay only to the company's official UPI ID or bank account given in the written booking confirmation.
  • Never pay the full amount in advance.
  • Always ask for a receipt for every payment.
  • If someone calls asking you to pay a different account, confirm with the company on its official number first.

On Moving Day

  • Make sure the team is from the company you booked — ask for the booking details.
  • Check and sign the list of goods, and keep a copy.
  • Note the vehicle number and the driver's contact.
  • Keep jewellery, cash and important documents with you.

If Something Goes Wrong

  • Keep all messages, receipts and the goods list.
  • Report the problem to the company in writing.
  • If you believe it is fraud, file a complaint with the police and the national cyber crime portal (cybercrime.gov.in), and contact your bank about the payment.
